Celebrating International Fairy Day: A Love Note to the Unsung Fairies

Celebrating International Fairy Day: A Love Note to the Unsung Fairies

A Lifelong Love of Magic

Today is International Fairy Day, a perfect moment to reflect on my lifelong love of fairies, glitter, and other magical things. This fascination has always been a core part of who I am. Perhaps it's deeply rooted in the feeling that I’ve never felt entirely at home in the ordinary world. For as long as I can remember, I have suffered from anxiety and depression and now suspect I have undiagnosed ADHD. The start of this business has highlighted it tenfold. My inability to stay on task, getting easily distracted, and feeling dissociated from myself and others have often led me to lose myself in my over-romanticised imagination. The fact that I often live in my head is probably where my kinship with the magical, whimsical, and otherworldly has originated and thrived.

The Magic of Fairy Love

The seeds of my fairy-like love are deeply rooted in memories of my nan, an insatiable artist with endless creativity. She allowed me to explore her collection of costumes from plays long gone, adorn myself with her jewelry, and play music on her piano whenever I wished. Her encouragement to dance to my own beat and never conform left an indelible mark on me. She was an artist, a dreamer, full of love, forgiveness, and imagination, and I cherish the fond memories of our time together.

My fairy godmothers, in the form of my many aunts, also played a significant role in nurturing my love for the magical. Though some of them couldn't have children of their own, they showered me with love and introduced me to a world of wonder, independence, and next-level party planning. I remember always feeling safe and warm with them, and they constantly led and encouraged me to become the strong, independent woman I am today.

However, the true Fairy Queen in my storybook has always been my mother. Her tireless efforts to create a magical world much better than hers for my brother and me are unparalleled. She went above and beyond to make our childhood extraordinary. Her creativity and dedication to every occasion—birthday cakes, parties, Christmas, lost teeth, sickness—are moments I treasure deeply.

Creating Magic for the Next Generation

Growing up with such wonderful fairies in my life has shaped me into the person and mother I am today. Their kindness, empathy, and creativity have influenced me endlessly. Now, I strive to create the same magical moments for not only my children but also yours. I’m committed to spreading and sustaining the magic, ensuring children believe that magic, goodness and kindness exist in the world and can flourish. By creating memorable moments and magical experiences, I hope to instill a sense of wonder and joy in children’s hearts, offering products that expand the mind and teach mindfulness, kindness, and empathy.

A Love Note to the Unsung Fairies

So, I raise my hot cacao and toast all the unsung fairies who make the magic happen behind the scenes in homes every day. Whether you are packing a sweet love note in your child's bag, wiping away tears, or sprinkling fairy dust over a pillow, you are the magic maestros, the sparkle spreaders, and the magic makers. You bring magic to your little ones' lives, even when they don’t know it. You make life fun, memorable, and create delicious childhood memories they will cherish for years and replicate when they, too, grow their own wee ones.

When you are having a tough day and are one small person tantrum closer to losing your mind, take a breath and remember your fairy dust will continue to bring joy and wonder for years to come. Dust off your wings and keep up the incredible work, my fairy friends. We have another day of wishes to grant, so together we can raise kind-hearted, open-minded children who will change the world for the better.

To all the fairy-like caregivers out there (whatever that looks like for you), thank you for your dedication and love. Your efforts make a world of difference. Let’s continue to sprinkle fairy dust and create magical memories for our little ones.

Create Magical Moments at Home

With all that in mind, I understand it can be hard to come up with play ideas and keep up with the Pinterest mums, so I’ve listed a few activities that my kids love that you can do with your children to create magical memories and connection.

Fairy Letters: Surprise them with a letter from the fairies encouraging kindness and imagination. If this is something out of your comfort zone, you can check out my templates here.

Fairy Hunt: Go to a park and look for old trees that could be hiding fairies. In Auckland, you could visit the beautiful old trees in the Domain or Cornwall Park. Or go check out the fairy houses by Fairyworks at Hobsonville Point.

Mindful Potion Play: Create an exploding volcano using jars, citric acid, food coloring, and vinegar, or grab one of our magic potion kits to make it even more magical and fun.

Craft Projects: Create some memorable art together; my kids love painting butterflies or creating marble art.

Storytime: Read fairy tales and stories that inspire imagination and wonder. A favorite book of ours about feelings is "In My Heart - A Book of Feelings" by Jo Witek.

Acts of Kindness: Encourage children to perform small acts of kindness, explaining that fairies love to see good deeds. Could they write a note to a friend or draw a picture for an elderly neighbour?

Good luck and enjoy!

Magical wishes,

Emma x
